Perhaps the only constant
Imagine waking up at 6am in the morning. You're in the sixth grade, waking up dreadfully to go to school. Because, well, its 6 am... You wake up to the sound of rain and thunder and a small part of you is hopeful of not going to school that particular morning. Your mum walks into your room, she tells you that school is shut due to the heavy rains. That moment right there, what you feel, is just pure happiness and satisfaction.
Since then, your life has changed drastically. You know it, I know it. Yet, at times, we live in denial. We cling on to the past just because it's familiar(yes, this is inspired from HIMYM, don't come at me). You've probably lost someone very close to you during this ghastly pandemic. The past two years of everyone's lives have been like an eye opener, I think we can all agree to that. Maybe you went through a heartbreak, maybe you lost interest in things that made you immensely happy. Maybe people around you don't understand you the way you want them to, or worse, need them to.
Maybe you're not doing so good mentally. You may not realize this but you're the hardest on yourself. You may think you're not, but maybe you are and you just don't know it. After giving this a lot of thought, it became a little clear to me as to why we're so hard on ourselves. In a world where things don't feel right, when you feel you have no control over anything in your life, being hard on yourself is the only thing which gives you a sense of being in charge. Let that sink in for a while.
When you get through a really hard phase of your life, you realize things. It's really not that hard to not overthink things. Its really not that hard to not care what people say about you. It's really not that hard to accept yourself for you are. When you're really heartbroken is when you think about things that you SHOULD be feeling to get over that, and not the things which you CURRENTLY ARE feeling.
Together, today, right here and now, let's make a promise to ourselves. To not be so hard on ourselves, to be kind to others around you. It's a different kind of comfort to know that you're not the only one going though tough phases in life yet the only time we seem to forget this is when its needed the most. Your life is changing, so are you. People around you are changing, so are you. The environment is changing, so are you. Don't try to stop change. You won't know how that change will affect you, only time will tell. Be grateful, be appreciative of what you have and what you are. I'll leave you with one last thought, inspired by none other than Vir Das.
